Hey everybody! It's been another good week here in Tizayuca, but lots more mellow than last week.
Monday evening we taught a lesson or two, and the rest fell through. One of them was really good though! I was leading which was kinda scary but it ended up great! The lady we were teaching, Maricela, loves the bible and reads every day which is always good to hear. So we talked about the bible for a while and then we read John 10:16 which is the scripture that says "other sheep I have which are not of this fold" talking about the Book of Mormon. So we taught her about the Book of Mormon, she downloaded the app and now were teaching her pretty frequently!
When our other lessons fell through, we just walked around the neighborhood calling people in the area book. We walked by one of the neighbors’ houses and they invited us to come talk with them. We aren't allowed to go into their houses, but we can meet with them outside their houses on their porch. This family has a big covered porch so we went in there and talked to them for a while. They're nondenominational Christians and have been friends with the missionaries for a while. The mom also sells food out of their house to the neighbors, so she gave us hot cocoa and the pastries called volovones(?) And they were super good! It's always good to talk to people in person. It helps my Spanish a lot and it sure beats calling people all night!
Tuesday we had to go to Pachuca for a leadership meeting for Elder Garza. I wasn't invited to go into the meeting, so I had a little exchange with two other junior comps who also weren't invited. Elder Garza took the phone with him and the same thing happened with one of the other guys, so we only had one phone between the three of us, and we can't contact anyone in person. And the meeting for our comps was literally 8 hours long. So we called like all the people on this elder’s phone and then just hung out for the remaining 5 hours. One of them started the mission with me so it was fun to talk to him for a while, but kinda felt like a waste of a day, because we had to cancel all our lessons for this meeting and I couldn’t really do much while my comp was gone.
Wednesday was the first day of Mexican Independence Day. It's kind of a two-day celebration. Pretty much nobody picked up the phone and like all our lessons fell through, so it was a pretty slow day. But we bought pozole (soup) from a neighbor. Pozole is what everyone eats on the 15th of September. Kind of like the 4th of July and hamburgers haha. But that was super good.
Thursday was the second day of Independence and Nuevadehli brought us Birria! Super good! It's a soup with meat but you get the meat out with a fork and make tacos with it and then eat the soup. Again, not much happened because of the holiday. But our one lesson that actually happened went from 9-11 at night. Very long haha.
Friday was uneventful except Elder Garza had a little bible bash moment with a catholic where they had a discussion about the trinity. Garza won haha
Saturday we finally got gas so we could have hot water. It had been like 3 weeks of cold showers! We also made pizza al pastor which is probably so bad for you but also delicious. So we bought a pizza from little Caesars and then went to a tacos al pastor place and paid them to put a ton of al pastor, onion, cilantro and pineapple on it and it's so good. But it gave me a pretty bad stomach ache.
Sunday was really good as well! There was close to 100 people at church! I played piano in sacrament and then after in a baptism for another ward. All of our lessons fell through, so we called people for like 4 hours. Not my favorite when that happens.
Also Carlos and Citlali the two little kids I talked about last week are getting baptized this Friday! Which is also my mom’s birthday! The 24th will be a good day! So pretty regular week with some fun stuff! Also, I ran 16 miles this week! Sorry the email is kinda long.
This week I studied the end of Helaman and the beginning of 3 Nephi. It’s always crazy to me how quickly the people in these chapters forgot the signs and miracles they experienced. They go from being super faithful to killing prophets and overthrowing the government in like 5 years. But I think it's because the coming of Christ was so soon that satan was trying his hardest on the people and I think we’re seeing the same things now. Kinda scary. Well, that’s all for the week. I hope you’re all doing well! Send me an email if you want! spencer.stevenson@missionary.org
Love, Elder Stevenson
